Course Description

Basic Training

To meet the minimum standard of competence for all seafarers assigned to shipboard duties as
required in Section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code as amended, this course is designed to enable the
trainees to successfully demonstrate the competencies on Elementary First Aid, Personal Safety
and Social Responsibilities, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting and Personal Survival Techniques.

Specifically, at the end of the course, the trainee must be able to:

  • survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment;
  • minimize the risk of fire and maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency
    situations involving fire;
  • fight and extinguish fires;
  • take immediate action upon encountering an accident or other medical emergency;
  • comply with emergency procedures;
  • take precautions to prevent pollution of the marine environment;
  • observe safe working practices;
  • contribute to effective communication on board the ship;
  • contribute to effective human relationships on board the ship;
  • understand and take necessary actions to control fatigue.
